I can't remember when I started taking pictures, but I was a child who loved capturing moments and turning them into art. This was back when you used film cameras to document important moments in life, not every little detail of your day. You dropped off the roll of film at the one hour photo (if you splurged) and hoped it came back with perfect glossy memories you could frame or adorn a scrapbook with stickers and glitter. I became obsessed with finding "the shot" with every event I attended as photography editor of our award-winning yearbook in high school.
I was going to study photojournalism in college, but changed my mind for a practical marketing degree. During my twenties, I struggled through a number of unsatisfying office jobs that didn't make me happy and I ambitiously pursued a graduate degree in public health. Working in a hospital was difficult and patient care drained every ounce of me. I decided I needed to seek out my passion, which was taking pictures, of course. I was always happiest when I was traveling overseas and shooting my surroundings.
I can't travel all the time, but I've decided to take photography more seriously. My husband calls me, "JulieBeans" and it only made sense to bring "Photobean" to life.
